King was indeed an extraordinary man with an extraordinary vision, but it was severely hindered by systemic constraints, meddling, and an underdeveloped focus...by the time of his death, he had finally abandoned his multicultural utopian idealism because he knew his movement was ultimately a failure, but the organizations and demonstrations that occurred with his help created a powerful example of resistance, agency, and community in black America. Great man, questionable legacy, but great man.

His death must have been a PR stunt too right? Tell us what would be a preferable option to the opportunities available to blacks in America today. I'm sure you are unbelievably oppressed sitting on your computer, being able to eat where you want, being able to attend what university you want, being able to fly out of the country,etc.

I'm sure going to war with the white race and being forced to stay in segregated areas of the country is a great thing. Segregation worked out great for the Indians when whites forced them onto those reservations. Whites did us a favor by redlining us and keeping us out of predominately white neighborhoods right? Funny how all of you guys screaming for this revolution will never end up busting a shot, but will go around and call someone like MLK who lost their life for this struggle some kind of phony. Please tell me what we would have gained from going into a drawn out war with whites while being huddled together in segregated areas... you know which makes us very easy targets to be destroyed like Black Wall Street? Please tell me what would have been the preferable method of action to what MLK did and how that would have improved our standard of living over what we have today.

A lot of people all over the world who are governed by their own people would LOVE to be in America utilizing the opportunities we have here today. America isn't perfect, but there is a ton of opportunity available here. Don't you think a North Korean would love to be here than over there? Some Chinese worker stuck in a factory 16 hours a day getting paid pennies? Some Mexican civilian caught up in the midst of the drug war? Cubans will risk their lives to come here. I can go on and on. Don't you think the average Somalian wouldn't love to switch places with the average African American?

What is stopping us from economic self-reliance right now? Is some invisible white man stepping in preventing us from saving and stacking our money? Are we prohibited from reading books on financial literacy and learning how to invest in the stock market? funny thing is, if you criticize a black athlete for spending $500,000 on jewelry, which could've sent 10 black kids to college, you'll be called out for hating and trying to tell him what he is doing with his money... but we're supposed to expect whites to care about our economic situation when most blacks don't care about it?

Integrated society isn't forcing us to spend how we spend or do what we do. We simply CHOOSE not to spend amongst each other or work together more economically... or are you saying 'the white man' is so powerful he is controlling our minds and preventing us from starting businesses together and handling fiscal matters responsibly? If there is a better standard of living out there for the black man, there is nothing stopping us from getting our passport, getting on a plane and going to that other land. The white man isn't putting a gun to our head and forcing us to engage in consumerism. Anyone who engages in it chooses to embrace that mentality.

There is nothing stopping blacks from getting together, buying some financial books, reading them and coming together to form an investment club or to start up a business. The reality of the matter is we'll see 4 or 5 Mexicans living together, shopping at Ross, cutting grass and clown them for it... that is until they've stacked enough money to start their own lawn care business and they're eating well and hiring their own. We'll clown that Nigerian for his accent and 'looking dusty' until all of that nonstop studying pays off and he has his Ph.D and is eating well. Is there racism here? Absolutely. Is it so prevalent as to keep us from being economically self-reliant if we so choose to be? Nah.
