Very powerful portion of his letter from Birmingham jail that has always stuck with me since I first read it. Still very relevant and I'm sure given the conversations here, a lot of people can apply it to many things instead of just "white moderates"

I attended a mostly white church for over 10 years, and ended up leaving due to the church's complacency on police shooting and support of Donald Trump as president. Lost a lot of friends. My wife is still there and it's caused a rift in our marriage.

It's kinda why I'm on here so much. The coli is my catharsis.

It's the same dynamic though. Not saying that it's always right in every dynamic but we'd be lying that the same mentality isn't present in a lot of discussions about other topics. Particularly in leftist politics. I will say that despite my disagreement, that the conservatives in this country have learned to be less apologetic about what they want and when they want it and they are getting it.

It's not because he is referring to a specific type of person.

In short he's referring to people who do things for the wrong reason.

Being moderate doesn't mean they don't believe in some of the causes that help blacks, especially in regards to politics.

It's more of a social/ethical critique than merely political party affiliation.

But the way it's misused is largely starting from that point and going to the extreme by saying that white moderates or even non blacks as a whole can't be allies with black folk because none if them actually believe in the reasons for black advancement or taking his example, desegregation.

MLK has a lot of great writings out there that are much more militant/disruptive than what a lot of people attempt to redefine him as. In many ways this speech foreshadowed how he's been reimagined.


I do find this topic particularly interesting and worth discussion.
