The majority of her family doesn't even speak English...so I think I will take her word for what the culture is since she actually lived in it for most of her life...You would not want to hear the story of why her family moved to the US in the first place...

I am well aware of the difference between a dowry (which is in fact supposed to be paid to the bride and not the family) vs a bride price (which is in fact paid to the family and not the bride). I know that is how it is SUPPOSED TO WORK. I also know that in most instances, the dowry giving to the bride is something that is generally going to be more useful to the father...and general IS used by the father...and I am not naive enough to think that this is an accident.

Middle eastern cultures follow Islam about as much as American cultures follow the bible...
