Modern NBA players "being more skilled and advanced" is an absolute myth, the rules just changed

AI changed the game for sure

If you watch TNC, Ballislife or any of the 1v1 YouTubers, it’ll show you first hand how the carry and gather rules allow players to do what they want

Im not really a fan of it, I understand the gather + 2 step rule but it’s getting a lil ridiculous

this thred has been made 25 times since that Thinking Basketball video came out last year which gave an even handed approach on this topic That this thread is intentionally ignoring.

to keep it simple, if you want a gauge of how improved the league is on a skill level, look at free throws percentages:

notice when it goes from low 70s to now nearly 80%

You used to give your point guard the ball at the end of games if they were an 80% FT shooter. Now your big man is more than likely comfortable taking free throws since they shoot in the 80s. It's not the cleanest example, but that's a baseline and unchanged example of the jump in skill level.

that doesn’t mean that great players werent skilled and couldn’t play in today’s NBA. But a lot of people couldn’t back then. That’s called evolution. We got a 7’5” guy that is quick and has small guard handles and can shoot. He is an outlier, but his skill level is immense.

Dribbling has definitely improved

The third big man on the roster has better handles than their counterpart 20 years ago.

I don’t think there is a huge leap in starting five talent. It’s bench talent that’s gotten better.

Yea, league clearly has a more talented upper-to-lower middle class of players compared to 20-25 years ago. Better shooters, more capable handles.

But shout out to the Tyrone Hill, Keon Clark, Bo Outlaw cats… the Jerome Junkyard Dogs for helping sink ratings in the early 00s with their shytty skill sets that “forced” Iverson, Vince, and TMac to throw up 5 for 22 stat lines

Hell my nygga Chuck Hayes is a Houston legend, GOAT shooting form. Disgrace TMac and Yao couldn’t win with him

More depth on teams now than 90s.

Today's backups are better than yesterday's backups by a mile.

Politics prevents a lot of bench players from getting more minutes.

But on the flip side the third big man has worse low post scoring moves than their counterparts 20 years ago
