Though it’s usually a lower enlisted position, the Armorer is a pretty “powerful” position. When it comes to any other duties, rank matters. Inside the arms room the highest ranking armorer is king.
Because sensitive items (weapons, radio’s, optics, etc.) have to be legally accounted for, an Armorer, by order of commander, can keep a unit in its company/troop/battery footprint for weeks if something isn’t accounted for until it is found. When the company gets back from the ranges everyone must clean their weapon for storage. If the Armorer doesn’t deem the weapon clean enough they will kick it back to be re-cleaned. If he accepts custody of the weapon then it becomes his responsibility. It can be a general screaming at the top of his lungs that he’s in a hurry and the Armorer can look back blank faced until he feels like closing the little window slot in disgust... That general better come back when his weapon is clean.
People can check out personally owned weapons by calling the Armorer while off duty, they can check weapons out for schools, etc. The Armorer can come in at random to do checks and inventories on a whim.
If it was a normal situation, and he came in to double check some shyt on the weekend. Nobody would guess anything was out of the ordinary if he called in someone to verify something, especially his subordinates. He a specialist, not an NCO, but sometimes positions supersede rank. I’ve had an entire 4 day weekend ruined by my Armorer who was the same rank as I was, at the time (Private first class). His alarms system went down and he was too lazy to guard the arms room so a bunch of random privates had to guard it all weekend. That’s where I learned to “call in drunk”.
Plus the Arms room is the perfect place for privacy. It’s basically a vault and you can’t really hear anything once the door is closed. All my armorers used to say they’re doing inventories and go sleep all day.
