Weekly reminder:

Susan G. Komen owns most of the pink ribbons you see in October. They also own the phrase "for the cure". They control the rights to use them in any charitable context. That right makes them quite a bit of money, as any organization who wants to appear charitable this month (read: pink ropes) must legally do so through Komen.

Where the pro-cancer comes in: Susan G. Komen uses a large portion of its donations on advertising and certain legal fees. The advertising is to promote that pink is the official color of breast cancer awareness... and the legal fees are to sue the pants off of any other breast cancer charity that dares to use pink or the word "cure".

Even if you ignore the fact that Komen's executives make too much (and you really shouldn't), you can't ignore the fact that a donation to Komen is a donation against other breast cancer charities. Ones that actually spend donations to fight breast cancer. Ones that would spend more if they weren't having to waste their donation money on legal fees due to being sued by Komen. Millions upon millions of dollars of cancer donations every year are wasted on lawyers and court fees thanks to Komen. This all goes towards proving that they aren't a charitable organization trying to battle breast cancer, they're a business trying to make money and protect their brand.
