Out of all the Monster series, this is the weakest one. I will say this much.

Charlie Hunnam is a fantastic actor. He played Gein with the right mix of naivete, menacing, stupidity and a sort of almost animalistic intelligence and and wove it seamlessly with a mind that always clearly fractured.

That being said.

This could have been knocked out in 4 episodes maybe 6 max.

They did a documentary on Ed Gain I want to say sometime in the early 2000s and even then the details of his actual life are on the sparse side so I get it Murphy had to fill in the gaps but I thought all of the rationales regarding why he did what he did were a little too clean.

Also he didn't kill his brother.

He never used a chainsaw in real life IIRC

He was confirmed not to be a cannibal

He wasn't a necrophiliac and had complexes about sex

We also didn't need to tie in Alfredhock and Psycho and TCM of SOL. Yes Gein may have been in influence on some of the characters but a lot of that was made up too

Also the neighbor he had a thing with wasn't even a teen/early 20s. She was about 50.

I liked that. The ending at the cemetery was great. If that was Charlie doing the Chainsaw Dance he did it well.

I don’t take it as an empathetic pov. I see it as painting these “monsters” as the fukked up humans that they are. This series doesn’t seek to absolve the killers, it shows the ugliness of what they did. One thing I do like about season 1 and 3 is that they always try to include the killers acknowledging and accepting responsibility for their actions.

Too often I see people calling saying actions are evil, or calling the perpetrator a monster. I get it, but people overlook little signs and shyt every day because they have some kind of mental image of Hannibal lecter or Michael Myers when they think of killers lol.

Everytime I hear, “I never thought he would have done something like that…”, I think to myself that it’s because they weren’t looking for a human.

These serial killers are often the culmination of neglect, psychological/physical/sexual abuse, repression, on top of congenital or acquired fukked up brain chemistry. They’re often more Steve urkel than Michael Myers. I think it would be stupid to not show the human side. Maybe more people would be more willing to keep an eye on these weirdo’s, note children being abused when they see it, or get their children psychological help when they see signs of something fukked up in them.

The acting by Charlie Hunam alone is worth it if you like performance art. If you go into it thinking it's going to be a documentary/accurate and not an extended episode of American Horror Story you should relax on that, have a little fun (possible), be disturbed and probably impressed by Charlie.
