I kinda see the backhanded compliment. It's like saying "I could be lyrical and crazy if I wanted to, but I'm about this money"
He's basically saying: "he's commercial, I'm supposed to be the "weird" black guy but he outweirded me, so I have to find another way to be weird and stand out, because I'm a suburbreh, and I have no natural connection with other black people...The connection I have with my white fans doesn't satisfy me. I want praise like him but I'll never get it, because I made myself different in the wrong way. Whoops."

So because he doesn't hide his message behind convoluted reference filled bloated lyricism "he's the opposite of mystery".

If he wants to see what happens when you make a career based on daedalian "over your head" messages and lyrics he should consult one Lupe Fiasco.

If you want people to feel what you're saying, speak their language. There's a difference between dumbing down and communicating effectively.
