Why one tech startup is going all in on the 4-day workweek

It’s a tight labor market, but Jennifer Christie has been seeing an uptick in résumés lately. There seems to be a clear reason why. The chief people officer at one-click checkout tech company Bolt helped institute a new policy for employees as of Jan. 4: a four-day workweek.

“Things like a four-day workweek are bolder steps than hybrid,” she told Yahoo Finance Live in an interview. “We do believe we need to take bigger steps to make sure people are more productive and efficient, but also make sure that we are avoiding the burnout we keep hearing so much about.”

Bolt ran a pilot program for the shortened week last fall. When the company surveyed employees afterwards, 94% of professionals and 91% of managers said they wanted the program to continue. Eighty-six percent said they were more efficient with their time.

The electronics conglomerate Panasonic is the latest major Japanese company to announce a four-day workweek to interested employees, Nikkei reported.

"We must support the well-being of our employees," Panasonic CEO Yuki Kusumi told investors at a recent briefing, according to the outlet.

Known for its intense work culture, corporate life in Japan can be so unforgiving that dying from overworkingis not unheard of.

In a bid to improve the country's work-life balance, the Japanese government last June recommended that companies allow staff members to opt for a four-day workweek, the German broadcaster DWreported.

I’ma hustler but this work till you drop culture needs to be checked out.

Not in my opinion

It was my favorite working/hour shift (depending on the shift).



I was personally able to get so much more done in a day, missed traffic and commutes due to it being outside of “normal working hours”.

Gym at or near office so could hop there either during work breaks or right after, and a 3 day weekend every weekend . Actually being more motivated to go back in and see what was happening. And I still put in a full 40 or more sometimes.



Quality of life could actually improve across the board if this was implemented as a standard practice… but they do not actually care about the quality of life. This Rat race is designed
