Between her voter registration efforts and her exploiting a legal loophole to own her own masters**, I have a decent amount of respect for Taylor Swift.

Basically it's two types of ownership in the music business: songwriting copyright and publishing rights. She held the former and not the latter, and was locked into a shytty exploitative contract with her label (i.e. a standard industry contract).
She leveraged her songwriting rights to independently record new masters for her most popular songs--in several cases sounding indistinguishable or better than the originals--and because she has a mad loyal fanbase they ate that shyt up. She didn't technically violate her contract with the label, but it essentially made their publishing rights worthless.
