Beirut, Asharq Al-Awsat—More than 700 people were killed in Syria over the course of Thursday and Friday, in what activists say were the bloodiest 48 hours of fighting in the conflict to date.

The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Rami Abdul Rahman, told Asharq Al-Awsat that this was the first time casualties had topped 700 in the space of two days since the conflict began in 2011. He contrasted the violence to the gas attack in the Ghouta region close to Damascus last year, which he said killed around 500 people.

The UK-based SOHR tracks casualties on both sides of the Syrian conflict by collating reports from a network of observers on the ground in the country.

The final toll was announced after the SOHR reported that 270 people had been killed in fighting between pro-Syrian government forces and militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), when the latter seized the Shaar gas field east of the city of Homs on Friday.

Abdul Rahman said the death toll of Thursday’s clashes was 396 people, while Friday’s total reached 314, adding that 90 more people were still unaccounted for, although they were also expected to have been killed.

At the end of June, ISIS declared that it had formed an “Islamic State” on territory it controls in Iraq and Syria, and had appointed its leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi as a new “caliph,” or spiritual and political leader of the world’s Muslims.

While this, and its role at the vanguard of the rebellion against the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki, has gained the most attention in recent weeks, the group has also continued its attempts to win more territory in Syria. In particular, it is continuing to strengthen its hold on provinces in eastern Syrian territories like Deir Ezzor, expelling or killing members of other Syrian rebel groups and battling to take territory controlled by Syrian Kurds.

As well as expanding territory under its control, ISIS is also reported to be cracking down on activities it deems contrary to its radical interpretation of Islamic law, including execution by public stoning.

ISIS reportedly carried out the stoning of a woman charged with adultery in the main stadium of the city of Tabqa on Thursday. SOHR said ISIS fighters brought a car filled with rocks and stoned the woman they accused of adultery to death, adding that residents refused to participate in the stoning.

Its a terrible humanitarian crisis. These victims are looked at as victims of war and not put in the same breathe as innocent civilians, which they tend to be. This type of angered uprising is prevalent in the Arab world right now and atrocities are happening all over. ISIS is taking over very quickly which poses a very real and serious threat to Western interests in that region of the world. It helps justify Israeli actions in trying to eliminate militants as they don't want ISIS forming a base anywhere near them. ISIS poses a serious threat to everything the US has done in Iraq. They could potentially get us to send troops back in which is not what the American public wants but may need.

The ultra-religiousness of the ISIS movement is the most troubling part. The worst part is that its a highly b*stardized version of Islam that will send them all back to the Dark Ages. They are moving backward rather than forward. The extremism of ISIS does not bode well for anyone.

That's why I'm against removing strong dictators from Muslim countries.
They maybe horrible but the alternative is far worse. Most of the Muslims in that part of the world are uneducated and uncivilized.
Borderline barbaric stone age motherfukkers . They need a strong man in charge to put them inline.

None of this happens if Saddam is around

The last line is a very good point. Saddam would have kept them in check. However, he was an evil b*stard himself. How do we manage the fine line between having a brutal dictator or having a brutal uprising? Very hard to pick a side.

I agree that the Middle East hasn't fully developed and forcing them to become a democracy before there time is what's leading into chaos, which is why I'm Pro President Assad plus I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't rule like him :sas2:
And I also agree that the destabilizing of the Middle East as a whole has a lot to do with taking out Saddam Hussain.
I wouldn't call them uncivilized or barbaric though it's just they haven't grown with the modern world

I'm not sure who is more evil here.

The real danger to ISIS is Qasem Soleimani and his elite Iranian brigades, this one man changed the Syrian war 180 degrees, on all fronts. Assad is winning because Soleimani is running the show, all the Syrian generals take direct orders from him, and his staff run the entire war effort. Two of his lieutenants have been sent to Iraq with a few hundred men, you should watch carefully what happens next, because it will not be good for the ISIS.

One thing you should know about Soliemani is that he is an evil genius, he plays the psychological game very well.
Do you know his latest trick in Syria?

Due to his suggestions the forces of Assad have been behaving strangely the last few months. They have been treating Sunni civilians very well, and have even been treating Free Syrian Army well. They have started freeing FSA soldiers and telling them to go home to their families. Which is a huge :wtf:

What does this do to future battles? When combined with inflicting severe tactical defeats, it encourages people to surrender and give up weapons knowing that you will likely not be harmed, if you don't believe it, your friend who was a former prisoner will tell you exactly how he was treated. Recently there have been mass surrenders, and areas re-captured by the Assad forces have been quiet.

It looks nice doesn't it...

But the evil thing about this strategy is that first of all, all non native syrians i.e mujahids from other countries are tortured for information and then shot in the back of the neck and burried in mass graves. :leon:

This is why they are fighting to the death when they cannot escape.

and all those freed Syrian rebels are photographed and fingerprinted because as Soleimani has said, in 2 to 3 years when they have total victory and peace. They can always look up the files and arrest all those rebels in our own time without any distractions.
F*kin evil b*stard ,...
This is the guy ISIS have to deal with, one group of evil b*stards against another far more evil and capable b*stard....:pacspit:

I wish there was a way for both of them to just disappear. The Syrian people's revolution is such a distant memory and they're trapped.

Assad unlike his Israeli brethren is actually engaged in a fight against terror more than anything else, there's no way we should remove him. This isn't HAmas that we're talking about which is a simple resistance rebel group which has done some terror attacks. This is a scenario where either Al Qaeda or ISIS take over after him which would mean a death sentence to any Christian, atheist, Shia, Druze, Kurd or non extreme sunni in the area, real terrorists which need to be fought with an iron fist.
