More young Koreans perceive marriage and having kids as unnecessary, data showed Friday, in yet another gloomy sign for the country's demographic crisis over extremely low birthrates.

Just 27.5 percent of women in their 20s considered marriage as essential in 2022, marking a drastic decline from 52.9 percent tallied in 2008, according to a recent survey released by Statistics Korea.

Around 41.9 percent of the males in the age group also found marriage necessary, falling 30 percentage points over the period.

For those in their 30s, 31.8 percent of women and 48.7 percent of men were positive about getting married.

The report also showed that while only 27.7 percent of Koreans in their 20s and 30s were positive about having no kids after marriage in 2015, the figure shot up to 44.1 percent in 2020.

Nevertheless, young Koreans remained negative about having children outside of marriage, with only 20.6 percent expressing a positive perspective in 2020, a slight increase from the 11.1 percent recorded in 2015.

The country's fertility rate — the number of children that are expected to be born to a woman over her lifetime — hit a record low of 0.78 in 2022, hovering far below other major countries.

Reflecting the trend, the statistics agency released a separate report earlier this week that Korea's current population of around 51.6 million is expected to decline significantly to 36.2 million by 2072. (Yonhap)

this doesn't make any sense at all just like those covid depopulation conspiracies. a smaller labor pool results in more competitive wages which isn't what capitalists want. capitalists also don't want a smaller consumer base to compete for.

Places like America, back in 1970, there were only 115 million people . By 2020, it ballooned to over 330 million people, with massive housing shortages in most metropolitan areas, congested traffic in rush hours that are auerysm inducing, and crumbling infrastructure in public transportation, a lot of the elite class are doing their best to keep cost of living artificially high, so that their best workers can work 70 hours a week and forego family growth to keep productivity high. They see people with families as a burden and want to make their employees literally being overworked and focused strictly on them.

America doesn't want to reach a billion people before a population crisis comes in like China and India is dealing with, so they put those obstacles in now.

nah you're just describing capitalism eating it's own tail for more short term profits. japan, china and south korea have a similar work culture to the U.S that doesn't provide for much of a work-life balance so personal relationships that lead to growing families don't form as much in those environments. governments are either begging citizens to have more kids, increasing immigration quotas or banning abortion. they want to have their cake and eat it too, more kids and workers working longer hours.

They realizing that now, that aint ever gonna happen, so what they are doing now is letting A.I. replace the would-be workers that will never be born while increasing the cost of living. Its a win-win for the greedy elites.
