Wildly daring album from a guy who could have done anything. Could have gotten a Kanye-assisted hit record. Heavy features. Whatever. I respect the hell out of this album and enjoy most of it.

maybe I should revisit it. Blackstar and BOBS had me thinking he was aiming for goat status. He went so left I just couldn't fathom it. I wrote Mos off after that and never checked for another project again. I just didn't understand.

It wasnโ€™t what I wanted from him, but I appreciate what it was.

Once I understood that he was as unable to get a release for his Black Jack Johnson project this album made more sense. this was really a mix of solo tracks along with Black Jack Johnson tracks. Thatโ€™s why it doesnโ€™t sound cohesive.

But the highs are really high. As an MC he was always on point.

Shock disappointing on first listen or two at release date. Grew into one of my favorite albums. Really great but caught people off guard.

It's a flawed yet but has enough dope or interesting to make it worthwhile for me. I agree it's nothing like I would have expected and I think that's a major reason why he did. It's one of those artist reset albums where they just say nah I'm gonna go all the way left instead of playing the game you want. To Pimp A Butterfly, In A Silent Way, Kid A type albums. Sometimes you hit that out the park, sometimes you falter (Electric Circus, which isn't terrible to me btw). He got it more right than wrong for me.

Great album that got unfairly hated because a lot of people wanted Black On Both Sides Part 2

So many gems on this album though

When I Think Back On It Mos Def He Never Came Off Like He Was Dropping Knowledge Or Putting People On Game About How Jews/White Dudes Were fukking Over Rappers, He Was Always More So Making Fun Of Rappers For Falling For It

He Wasnโ€™t The โ€œTake A Look At What Theyโ€™re Doing, Yo We Gotta Make A Movementโ€ :ohlawd:Type Cat

He Was More The โ€œWhite Man House On About 10 Acres And You Think You The shyt Cause You Got A Little Paperโ€ :mjpls: Type Cat

I remember when I heard the singing and the heavy guitars in 2004 ... I was like what the fukk is this. Then got back to Mobb Deep and Wu Tang. Ghetto Rock did catch my ear though, that melody stuck with me all the way to this day. But it's only now that I have developed a noticeable hip hop fatigue I'm starting to see the ingeniousness of this project. He could have washed out the Black On Both Sides sound and the audiences would have loved it. He could have sold out and had it all. But he did this, a musical, brave, artistic, timeless album.

:salute:
