Not surprised on that. I know Detroit and KC listened to Bay Area music too but as far as Mac Dre being something a half jewish kid from Toronto (Drake) was actively listening to when he was alive? Nah. Getting ahold of his music wasn't that easy then.

The H
had a friend who was from Seattle, who went back and forth to the Bay during that era tell me a funny story he had about Mac Dre.

I'll wait for the RIP Soulja Slim movement.

OP, name five independent rappers more deserving of praise than Mac Dre? Jay Z pays for a million dollar promotional campaign to reposition his past catalog like Reasonable Doubt into the classic discussions and you over here talking about a rapper who spurred a whole regional movement organically, to this day he has a cult-like following. Try uploading a Mac Dre video on YouTube or mention something interesting about him on Twitter and you'll see how many people search for the latest stuff on him regularly. His catalog spans 3 eras, over 15 years - his work exemplifies consistency as he was a seminal rapper of the Bay Area's 'golden age' and went on to carry a new sound on his back over a decade later. If anything you could compare Mac Dre to a Snoop Dogg. Nostalgia be what it is but we all know what happened to Rakim when he tried to make an attempt at being mainstream, even Dr. Dre and beats like "In Da Club" couldn't save him . . so who's overrated?

Living in the Burbs that Free Boosie shyt got so fukkin popular in that 18-25 age group. If you're a white person livin in the suburbs you're probably mostly listening to house/edm shyt, but I saw dudes who didn't listen to rap outside of your usual mainstream five (Drake/Kanye/Wayne/Jay/Em) rockin Free Boosie shyt, talkin about the dude (no lie) all 'genuine' and serious and shyt like it was some life changing shyt

I didn't hear of Mac Dre before thecoli tbh

Personally never got into Boosie so I guess I don't have a leg to stand on. Just the fact that I saw people who would play some Shabba Racks and Wild for the Night or some Drake at some college parties start bustin on that Boosie like really?
