I'm not defending all street/hood rappers, but a LOT of them are a great deal more intelligent than they let on.
A lot of people act like "substance" is what separates them, but often times when these conscious dudes open their mouths, they make incredibly poorly reasoned arguments and clauses that illustrate how little they know or understand a particular issue.
If you even listen to the interviews with some of these dudes who make straight party music or hood music, they can tell you more about a situation than probably 80% of the conscious ones. The difference is that they realize that good MUSIC is the point. The message comes second. If you want to send a message, you can't beat people over the head with it.
