My grandparents worked 3 jobs, worked hard and didn't want to get handouts. What does the "opportunity the people before them" have anything to do with anything? They didn't have a great, high payin job lined up for them. They came up on their own? My question is why can't people on welfare grind and work 3 jobs like my grandparents did? My grandparents didn't have a GED or a high school education or a college degree. People these days have access to a better education than they did and more opportunuties. So what's the excuse for bein on welfare for generations?

You call food stamps handouts, but what about public school, or housing assistance which I'm sure your grandparents used. They would not have been able to make a living without some type of government assistance.

Times have changed, and assistance has changed. When your parents came up working hard was enough. A man could go out and work his ass off and provide for his family. Those times are gone, now we have college graduates working at mcdonalds making less than enough to take care of themselves. Expenses have gone up while salaries have remained fairly stagnant. When you grandparents where coming up food, gas, heat, electricity, transportation, housing was all a lot cheaper.

A lot of the people on welfare are grinding and working just as hard as your grandparents, it's just that times have changed and the assistance they need has changed but at the end of the day it's all the same thing.

And there is no excuse for being on welfare for generations, but there are less black people in poverty now then when your grandparents were coming up, which is a direct result of these programs working for those who try to better themselves.

my grandparents never had housing assistance. they never recieved and money or food to survive. And times have not changed in the regard of working hard to support your family. u have a very apologetic disposition fam. do u really think my grandparents had it "easy" or "easier" because it was back in the 60's?

Maybe its just me and how i was raised but only the strong survive. i have never been on welfare. it was a time in my life where i had 3 jobs, i worked my day job, was a peronal trainer and worked as a bouncer/ bartender at night! why because i wanted my own place, i couldnt call on mama or dad for money, i had a car note, bills, student loans etc. i still wanted to party, kick it and travel. i found a way to make all that shhyt happen without fallin back on my family or the govt.

and alot of black people have the "hustle or die" mentality that are not on welfare. im just speaking to those people that refuse to accept "failure" "defeat" Some people wana keep havin kids knowin damn well they cant afford to have them. what kind of shhyt is that?

We should home school or send our children to non traditional schools anyway in my humble opinion.

I honestly think this more about the official count used to determine funding than being concerned with the welfare of the children.

I don't mean housing assistance as you think about it today, but there have always been programs to help people buy homes and afford education, and I'm sure your grandparents took advantage of those type of programs, hell if they got tax returns at the end of the year, they benefited from those programs. Not one black person in America comes from a real wealthy family, we all got to where we are by using the resources provided by those before us. I never said it was easier just different.

You seem like a very responsible person and you should be proud of yourself, but there are plenty of people who have worked just as hard as you, and still ended up needing help, you could get hurt and need help one day.

You say you've never gotten gov. assistance yet you speak about student loans. Did the government not assist you getting/paying those loans? If you went to a public university, they handed you money for doing that.

It is true the world over that the poorest people have the most babies. I dont know why but I think it has to do with education.

It has to do with religious beliefs. Most broke people need a spiritual support system and they beliefs overtake rational thought. Other words, accountability takes a backseat to their beliefs.
