Arlington is diverse in certain spots like Shirlington, border of Falls Church and Cleardon border near DC but @Nicole0416 is right about most of it.

Ok . I don’t mix and mingle in VA, I just know specific areas. I really don’t care about anything in VA, one of the worst states ever. I’m in MD when I’m in the dmv- my permanent home is NYC. I make moves and socialize in MD- that’s a 2nd home. 
All I’m saying is Danville ain’t it. Of all places to be in VA, that’s where I wouldn’t recommend especially with OP coming from New York. Northern VA is distinctly different from Southern VA Is my point.
@Blacque Butterfly-est - I’m not trying to get in your business or be negative but why Danville?? It’s concerning, that’s all. There’s other places in VA that I think would be more conducive especially with kids and a sense of diversity, job attainment.

The beach itself is...at least where we typically stay is???
Every time we stay at Hilton oceanfront near the Jupiter statue it’s clean. Trash cans every 100ft or so, trucks coming in early morning to clear out the trash everyday and comb the beaches...
Walkway that runs parallel to the beach well paved...
From my experience it’s quite clean.

I just went and looked up the numbers again. Danville is majority black. It’s a black city. Outside of those two small towns I mentioned, there’s a strong black presence in that area. You’ll be fine. It’s not as diverse as you’re used to, as it’s pretty much AA/white, just like most Southern cities. Yean really gotta worry about that confederate/KKK stuff, either. Them white folks ain’t going to mess with you or your family.
I believe you’ll find things in Danville, but you’re within 130 miles of every major NC city, outside of Asheville and Wilmington. There will always be something for you and your family to do. It’s a city of churches, so if you’re a believer, find you a good church home. If you or anyone in your family love sports, you always can hit up Greensboro for a day watching college hoops at the coliseum, or a baseball game watching the Grasshoppers. Danville has a baseball team as well.

Regions with large contingents of posters tend to get overrated a bit on this board, especially the DMV and some already hit the nail on Northern Virginia specifically, Absolutely soulless.
