At this point, you can't just say character assassination. If it was 1-5 then MAYBE, but over 20? 
Even when they tried to shut down Michael Jackson, they did it with sick children that could easily be coached and coerced into saying whatever for whatever. This is totally different. Everybody knows the greatest comedians have THE DARKEST DEMONS. That's the only way they're able to rationalize the harsh realities of the world and make it funny. To be a comedian, one has to be a little sick to be honest. Think of all the jokes they come up with and which ones actually make it to light. Much of it is based on personal experience.
Remember the era Bill came up in too.....HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY drug use.....and it was nothing to it either. Even my grandfather did coke and shyt back in his time. They were the real party generation. It was a time in the world that was unprecedented for the black man in america. It was the first taste of power and excess.....so coming from nothing it made it so easy for a man like Bill to be corrupted and corrupt others. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and what we've seen for the past 3 decades was a man with good intentions to portray the black family in a positive light. That doesn't mean his motives weren't also there to hide his demons.
It's possible he thought he could get away with rape, drugging and an overall abuse of power because his television show was giving out such positivity. This is how a sociopath rationalizes their actions when harming others. Bill Cosby's blackness doesn't mean that he's any different from any other rich, powerful, ego driven, sociopath who cloaks his narcissism and debauchery under a veil of televised goodwill.
