That’s what they would call themselves. In the United States, every black person is called “African American.” Look at the definitions according to the US census. It’s stupid.

The Census says Black or African-American which implies that there is a difference. You then can modify it with "Of Latino Descent" which clearly could apply if you're Black but not if you're African-American. The Census is not saying that all Black people in America are African American, the Census is saying "y'all are all one big nikka to us so we only gonna give y'all one box". Once again if you're not a descendant of chattel slavery in British North America then you are not African American. AADOS is a redundant statement...it's like saying Chinese American, Descendant of Chinese Immigrants.

On the Census form they use White, Black, African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. They even list it as Black or African American, so there is a clearly something distinguishing being Black and being an African American, however for the purposes of the counting of Black people they are all lumped together. Btw, Black or African American replaced Negro, which replaced Colored.
