man i remember MTV back in the 80s.....omg ...it was amazing......

LIVE SHOWS...GREAT VJ's (video hosts)...MTV NEWS which was the TMZ before TMZ

my boy had cable...which we didn't so i remember going over to his house.....

cause he told me MTV was gonna be replaying a RUN DMC concert that happened earlier that weekend in NYC...

it was great......here is that exact show..they even had backstage footage with LL cool j stoppin by

they had a lot of great shyt...live shows like Prince..Simply Red....Yo Mtv Raps...etc.

but we have to THANK MICHAEL JACKSON FOR MAKING IT ALL POSSIBLE...

because prior to the release of THRILLER......mtv did not play any BLACK ARTISTS....

until Yetnikoff at CBS/SONY threatned to pull thier whole roster if they didn't conform

My Pops Forever RIP
this is kinda sad....like someone said just bring back the old format and get rid of all the wack ass reality nonsense.
they won't do that. Besides, MTV birthed reality TV, so in a way even the good ol' days would need shyt like The Real World.

The old format in 2016 won't work because it's too easy to replicate that on our own. You're not gonna spend your Friday night glued to the TV waiting who's #1 on the top 20 countdown.

MTV a week ago or two was showing old episodes of Beavis & Butthead and I just stayed in all morning to see it. The idea of the channel will work for diehards and it will cost them nothing to run it

I don't know why people would complain about the amount of Hip Hop they played. I'd say not until the mid 90s did they start to play a solid amount of Hip Hop videos. My memory may be a bit :flabbynsick: at this point but I remember heavy rock videos, YO! MTV RAPS, Real World and News. They had more rappers at Rock N Jock than they did on heavy rotation.

I think this has a chance to work. When comparing which radio stations get listened to, in some cities classic stations (oldies, classic rock/pop & even classic hip hop) are even with or beating stations that play current music. It's hard to believe, but there probably is a huge untapped market for something like this. If you think about it, the technology generation (those 26 or younger) have grown up with computers, internet, iPod/iPhone, DVD and etc. Those people would probably not watch music on TV, or listen to terrestrial radio, because they have Youtube or Apple Music/Tidal/Spotify for that. Older cats 30+ might be the same, but this age group is more likely to still listen to terrestrial radio (especially those who are 35+). It makes sense to market to this age group, because they now have spending power, and they will be much more likely to watch music videos on TV compare to younger people.

I always thought that if MTV ditched their current format, and went back to what their format was 15+ years ago, it wouldn't be successful, because the younger generation can just hop onto Youtube to get their music. They don't have to wait all day for their favorite videos to drop like we did at that time.

They should just have a channel of straight music videos. Have certain hours dedicated to different genres. And certain hours dedicated to just OG videos, with the other half being all new shyt. Have artists submit their youtube videos to played on the modern blocks (they play it if it's been edited for curses and has decent views (over 500k? and trending up). People wanna a channel they can have on in the background, and reality shyt just don't cut it.
LOL You're asking for too much. These old white flavourless cac execs only want to drip feed everything.

Now is exactly the time to do it. 70's and 80's babies are now the big spending demographic and even 90's babies are looking for styles and things before their era. The timing is perfect.

Seems like the 90's are making a big comeback not only in music, but in Movies & TV too. I read somewhere recently that Gen Xers are the MOST nostalgic generation of all time as far as entertainment. I've never seen people around my age group long for the good ol' days quite like this.
