it doesn't work vice versa either
it just doesn't work on a large scale, that's why america is full of little pockets of "cultures"

Europe has just got to stomach it though, most of it has declining birthrates & a rapidly aging population.

Politicians also need to be frank with their voters about the reality. I feel this immigration discussions and the frank realities has been kicked down the road for so many years, that it has assisted the rise of the far right in europe

No. Maybe in 1900s Ellis Island era NY, but not now.
American pop culture is too pervasive...to the point of people coming to the country already being familiar with it and down. There are SUBCULTURES in American culture...

If automation means there will be fewer unskilled jobs in the near future, why is CAClandia importing so much cheap labor?:jbhmm:

I think Germany tried to send that message to the Jews and other minorities a little while back. I think it was maybe in the 1930's and early 1940's.

Anyone remember any more of what I'm referring to?

:patrice:

So if it's a sham is she inviting them in to commit a genocide against them then?

I drew the same exact parallel initially, but it's a huge leap to act like publically denouncing this, and in turn supporting a potential loss of and compromising of German values and traditions, is akin to committing, encouraging, or condoning genocide. She's basically saying adapt to our way of life or get out, nothing inherently wrong with that.

this is why i'm so pro-american...you can tell who doesn't have a passport or who is still soaking up that Freshman sociology and lacks anything beyond a textbook or assigned reading.

A lot of these guys really have no sense of what faces non-white people outside of the USA.

I've lived in Germany, USA, and I live in Canada now. Please, speak on what you know.

Yup...ghanian kids turning into bloods 2 weeks after moving to Tracy Towers in the Bronx. (Very common)
You realize US gang culture is international now, right? They pay close attention...hip hop is still the #1 youth expression format.

Theres 40,000,000+ black people in the USA.

Thats more than every black person in Europe and Asia combined.

Thats second to only Brazil outside of Africa.

Stop it.

I'm not trying you...i'm saying all this "lets leave the USA" tip is one of the most poorly rationalized talking points i've ever heard of.

If you're in the USA as a black person outside of Africa, you're starting life on 3rd base.

I'm having a laugh but it's hypocritical and poor leadership to flipflop on such a crucial issue.

It's sends not only the wrong message to the citizens but immigrants...

The whole thing is poor state statesmanship.

Hold up...you consider Canada something radically different from the USA? Yeah...not really challenging my point above.

I figured you might be joking, but I wasn't sure. I'm not sure if it sends the wrong message though, if they have no plan on changing their way of life to accomodate the immigrants in any way, shape, or form then she's saying exactly what she should say. It says in the first couple sentences that she denounced multi-culturalism in Germany a few years ago. She did the humane thing by letting in the refugees in their time of need, but she has no responsibility to make, or try to persuade German citizens to change their way of life, or their laws, for those refugees.

And yes I'm white why?

How is it not the wrong message? You're encouraging people to immigrate at great peril and then saying multiculturalism doesn't work which means to me whatever dream you're being sold will never become a reality. Assimilation is a two way street.

The tone of your comment kinda gave it away.

If you don't assimilate into your new host country, you shouldn't be there. :yeshrug:

Its one thing to keep your culture and traditions but its another to completely ignore the new world around you and not try to make yourself a part of it.

They immigrated to escape danger, and Germany accepted them, they had no responsibility to even do that, let alone change their values to accomodate them.

Was it the humane thing to do? Yes. Did Merkel speak out in support of letting them in? Yes, and that's admirable, but that doesn't mean they have to go to the extreme of completely altering their way of life to now adapt to those refugees. She didn't say come here and pursue a whole new life where you'll have complete freedom to be who you are (she didn't sell them a dream). She basically said we have an obligation as good human beings to help these people escape danger, they've already done that, and at the time 49% of Germans disapproved, only 39% approved of it. She's gone above and beyond in that sense to help these people, she compromised her popularity among her own citizens to help them.

And she also didn't say by reducing the immigrants that she means send them back to where they came from. If she pushes for that in the midst of the same crisis they fled to escape then that's terrible statesmanship, and just ethically wrong, but if she is just asking for help from other countries in the world, like she has done already, or using extreme political rhetoric to make the refugees assimilate faster, there's nothing wrong with that.

If the refugees can and want to adapt to Germany's way of life, and in the years and decades to come end up making up a large portion of the population then Germany's culture should naturally assimilate to their views and beliefs, but in the mean time Germany, or any country for that matter, has no responsibility to immediately and forcefully alter their values for incoming immigrants.
