Yeah like as you get older and more aware of what you listen to you compartmentalize your music. Gotta break it up, Freddie Gibbs is a guy I listen to when I need to feel like an a$$hole, then I combo that with currensy or les to feel like a cool uncle, pair it up with some Pete rock instrumentals to cool me out. I’ve gotten pretty systemic with how I play my music now, I consider my Apple Music playlists like my wine cellars lol

Cant only have one side of the coin. Trash dark music is no worse than trash "happy" music. And good "happy" music is no better than good "dark" music. indeed, some late 80's and 90's rap that I used to listen to on a regular disturbs my insides these days. A guy by the name of JohnTodd expounds on this subject.

Though I do agree with the sentiment, I think back to myself and I listened to the darkest of music (and made dark music) when I was going through the darkest of times. When I felt like everyday was a fight for my life in the hood well that’s the kind of shyt I was listening to. When I was depressed, that’s what I was listening to. Those stories were my stories.
Then I went to college and gained some hope + ambition and slowly drifted away from the dark music cuz it didn’t resonate no more. I started listening to ambition music. And once I made it, I started listening to that kind of music.
I do think that music influences people, I also think that what we gravitate to is driven by our story and circumstances.

Another example would be Death is Certain by Royce Da 5'9. The entire album is a dark ass place, but out of no where "Hip Hop" came on which kinda throws off the entire album, despite being a dope track.
