What will happen is this. Democrats in Congress will compromise with Trump's fascists (like Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren). Leftist civil society will not. This discrepancy in resistance or lack thereof will grow and grow and Trump incrementally moves America closer to nationalism.

By 2020, leftists in the Democratic wing like Bernie Sanders will be duelling with 'centrist' Vichy Democrats over their role in enabling Trump's rise. As the Democrats once again enter into civil war - Trump will demobilize enough voters and convince enough white Americans (and their non-white stooges) to secure a second term.
