They can be fixed. I fixed my brothers, but it was a lot of work. Any repair shop would have to charge you more than they are worth to fix them.

It could be the cable, but not likely. Try jiggling the cable while listening to them, if there is a short in the cable you should be able to hear it, if not there has to be a short in one of the cables in the side panel of the headphones.
