For me, I know the type of women that attracts to me organically, so I know what i'll be successful at. Some guys score with the party girls, or the librarian type girl, or the shopper materialistic girl, or the artistic girl. Your friend has a type of women he knows he's the best at scoring with, and just goes after those type of girls repetitively, like a hammer to a nail.
