So my friend graduated with his masters from Oxbridge last year with a degree in a STEM field.

You figure he's be living the Typical Coli Breh lifestyle, 6 figures, 6 dymes, 6 series.

Nope.

These days he's still in his parents house and unemployed. Blew through his savings and now receives handouts from his parents from time to time.

Dude says the only decent gigs are in finance and boring ass management consulting. Apparently those positions aren't all what they're cracked up to be. A lot of the salaries in those positions have been dialed down since 2008. They aren't paying like they used to.

He's tried looking for work outside of those fields and more along with his major but nobody wants to hire him because he's "overqualified" and has no experience outside of academia.

Apparently the only connections he's made we're with people that have chosen to remain in the UK and go into finance.

It was kinda wild to hear that he's in such a position. Dude's family is connected to a couple MNCs and he still can't get a gig. I mean, he's even good looking, too.

Maybe there's a part of the story that I'm missing, but then again, he could very well just be a victim of the times, despite all his advantages.

What does the fact that you think he's 'good looking' have to do with the rest of the thread? :leon:

I mean on top of his good schooling, high marks, and everything else he's one of those distinctly good looking guys that seem to get a lot of breaks in life.

Apparently this dude is getting none of that. You'd think he'd be on the way to world domination by now. But instead he's still kicking it in his mother's basement. Kinda wild.

As for the point of this thread I think it gives some perspective and it speaks to the reality that Ivy League/Oxbridge sorts aren't living in some hyper secret, super privileged other-world where their whole lives are handed to them on a silver platter that some of y'all like to think.

So?

If he's not applying himself, who cares?

You don't get a full ride to Oxford by being complacent.

It just seems like all his efforts were for naught.
I'm sorry the world didn't genuflect at his beck and call? :what:

WTF do you want us to say here?

Clearly oxbridge was a conduit to a better life and he didn't capitalize.

And I'mma need some proof on those "high marks" too.

The guy graduated top of his class in his undergrad. It was a really big deal.

The major he got, however, seems to value real world application experience as opposed to academic theoretical perspective.

As for what to say, I don't know. I talked with dude last night and it's a situation I though would be worth sharing. It's given me some perspective. Caused me to count my blessings as well.

:ahh: Thank God I didn't get some useless ass degree. Imma ride this cushy Finance life til the end.
My friend *just* got into financial planning and seems to be doing all right. A bit stuffy of a career path but he seems to be happy.

It'll be interesting to see where he lands up in the next few years.

But yeah, that's the sales side. The analytical side, which my Oxbridge breh would be on sounds like a nightmare. Knowing that you're busting your ass for less money than was offered less than a decade ago seems like it would be annoying as well.

First off your friend is fukking lazy. He's complaining saying these jobs arent good enough? WTF he's lucky to have a masters, it's his fault to pick a field where they didnt want him. You gotta think long term. Also he can always travel for a fukking job if he WANTED it bad enough...

If a potential employer told him he'd be making about 90k* but he'd have to relocate outta state would he go?

There are other jobs that would accept him but you said he turned them down because he thinks he's too good for them. Oh well it's his stupidity...
