Considering he is in Florida .. I dont think where you live would be relevant right? As it has no basis to the schools his son would be attending..

Maybe Im wrong ..

Brother man, we gonna have to disagree. I went to a magnet public school for high school and I still have to say it's nothing like regular public school.

Partying in big ass mansions
Gettin' drunk as fukk in 9th grade off of your friend's mama's wet bar in the basement
Ridin' in BMWs and Benzes gettin' at older women and scoopin' ya girls, or havin' your girl schoop you in one :leon:
Minimum parental supervision cause they are always out of town on business trips
Having access to the best athletic facilities
The drugs
The fake IDs
All the fine women
The clubs
The house parties
Spoiled freaks who hate their daddy :wow:

I wouldn't have my child grow up any other way :ohlawd:

Man, private school is the shyt. I didn't go for middle or high school, but because I was in the magnet program of a nearby school, we partied with them all the time. Especially the black students, created a very well connected network. Me and my best friend are some of the best known negros in Atlanta because of the shyt we pulled in high school, so I'd say if you could even get him in a magnet or IB school that would be great for him socially AND academically.

He's gonna be able to naturally gravitate towards other black people across the city/county who are in the same position as him.

:sadcam:

God, I wish I had this kind of an experience in high school. I went to a regular public school and suffered socially almost my whole life. I feel like an outsider almost wherever I go, unless I'm with other socially awkward kids who grew up as outsiders, but obviously, those are hard to find :snoop:

Try to get him into an elite college prep school somewhere in the Northeast so he can establish a network with rich WASP kids and their parents. By the time he'll be graduating from college, he can rely on this network to lead him into a good investment bank/ start-up / hedge fund / PE firm. Also, by being in an environment like this, your son will be able to mimic the behavior of the upper class and acquire their tastes, which will help in his career one day. These schools have scholarships based on financial need and aside from the social benefits, your son will get a great education :ld:

thats wassup; does he know what type of career he wants? If he wants to do something out of medical i'd suggest he goes to harvard. Prob go there for free; and a harvard degree will open the door for anything

not the right place to ask these questions

you need to define
gifted
genius
and this program that Duke has

duke has a great academic reputation for this to be a scam but if it costs money, you need to re-ask whether it is worth it. I didn't go through much of these programs but did okay on my SATs (1550/1600) and went to Columbia with a full scholarship program and med school on a full ride.

I am far from genius or gifted (even if the gifted word was thrown all over the place as a kid), I just take tests well. Since I started college, they have done a much better job of recruiting minorities to different opportunities early on (a part of me thinks its a study, esp if they want people to take standardized tests). Most of the kids in these gifted programs ended up being okay and at least make a decent living but not everyone is special. Most kids in Ivy League schools aren't shyt either.

At the end, since your son will have to prove his worth through these standardized tests, I say take opportunities on if they are free and don't bother with ones you have to pay for. However, you should actually talk to parents who have gone through one round of this recently.

A few people in my class took the SATs in the 8th grade including myself (I think I got a 1170 or something). There's 0 benefit to this unless you are actually on some ryan leslie genius type shyt.

I tested gifted like your son. It's been more of a curse than a blessing. You gotta be on him to focus his energies on positive stuff, otherwise he'll lose a sense of direction, which happened to me.

As far as taking the ACT and SAT early, i don't think it's gonna be of any benefit to your son. Just let him develop in school and do well, let me focus on learning the study and work habits that are essential. Also, let him enjoy his youth. Too much pressure at a young age can discourage him from academics. IMO you should just let him do his thing in school, even regular school, stay at the very top of the class and he'll get noticed more that way, rather than studying hard on tests at such a young age.

make sure lil man understands the "elite" options right now...meaning:

*being a doctor/surgeon
*being a lawyer
*being a banker/working on wall street

at the very least he should comprehend these options and the sacrifices/rewards they offer before he goes into college. it sounds like he's well on his way to an Ivy so these 3 options will be the most obvious to him. if these aren't appealing then, i can tell you from experience, it can be hard to find your way once you get there. once i figured out i didnt want to work on wall street, i was stuck w/ my dikk in my hand for about a year when all the on-campus recruiters were from banks or management consulting firms.

anyway, im getting ahead of where your lil man is. encourage him to do well in school but also find his passion. if he can find his passion before he gets to college he's well on his way to doing big things, honestly.

also, look into the MLT program. I believe they have something for HS students. it's also good to just sit him down for an hour and walk him through the admissions material for the Ivies so he knows what they're looking for. With his scores, there's no reason he can't go to Harvard/Yale/Princeton if he takes care of business as far as extracurriculars.

Oh, and tell him to stay the fukk away from Brown. :pacspit:

btw, it's a no-brainer to do the Duke TIP program. looks great on college applications and is no way a scam. most of the kids i knew that did the program also ended up going to Ivies. if they didn't, $$$ was the reason.
