There's a folder in your phone that stores the snaps when they're sent to you. If you go to it before you open it, it'll have a .nomedia extension that tells your phone not to put the picture in its gallery and only make it usable by the app. If you view it you got to do some light decrypt shyt to recover it which is what the apps would usually do.
