imagine my surprise when nydailynews.com that i occasionally check has the gall to ask me to subscribe to them monthly..

There's two ways to monetize on providing news. Have a subscriber system where you have to pay to get on their site. The other is to provide the news for free, but charge advertisers money to get their ads seen on high traffic pages. News sites are realizing giving away the news for free sucks.

Sometimes, I go to nba.com, nhl.com, mlb.com and nfl.com to verify sports news because sometimes, you never who is posting what. So many haters.

These newsites are establishing paywalls bc they don't have the revenue that ads used to generate due to the competition from independent reporting, independent media, blogs, youtube, etc. This is affecting both digital and print. That's why all these mass layoffs are taking place, the readership base are falling off. Failure of news agencies to keep up with the times. No has to go get the NY Post, NY Times, WaPo.. etc to access information anymore. Definitely not to pay for view.

People arent buying paper publications that much, so the newspapers, and magazines have to make up for the loss.
