Explain this to me like I am a 6 year old. I have lived in Jersey for the past 17 years and one thing I don't understand is the economics of the turnpike. how come the turnpike is so expensive especially getting into New York. Getting into New York is $22 and getting out is $18 (With a small car). With a truck and trailer its about $100. What I really don't get is........how come its so expensive but the roads are so fukking messed up?

Shouldn't the money maintain the road?? Share some knowledge

The state knows that most drivers only come to NJ just to use the turnpike and keep moving on to the next state. They put tolls like this to charge out of state drivers using NJ as a pass-through state.

Theres a reason tolls out of the turnpike are far cheaper than the ones going to Manhattan. NJ misses out on revenue since NY drivers don't pay to drive into NJ so they put extra ones on the highway to recoup when those same drivers come back into the city. Of course this also indirectly affects commuters too.

Now that is a question a lot of us would love to know from the state government :russ:

It's probably towards the bridge crossings that really need repair like the Pulaski and the Goethals bridges.

If you don't know how to get into/out of the city by staying OFF the Turnpike/GSP, you haven't been in Jersey long enough.

Cost me about $5-6 to get into the city from the Shore while adding about 10-15 minutes to the trip.

Used to drive limos and delivered air cargo containers to Kennedy/Newark Int'l. airports.

Also, IMO, the roads are fukked up because there's a LOT of people like me that avoid those expenses so the DoT's budget is always off and the money doesn't go to where it's supposed to go until AFTER the pol's get their cut.

Who uses the turnpike to get into the city besides commercial vehicles? :dahell:

Bennies. Cats come here for the beaches during the summer and the ONLY way they can get back North or South is via the Turnpike/GSP.

Tell them about Rte. 1 & 9, Rte. 278, Rte. 130, etc., and they look at you like..................:why:
