From my understanding, at least as far as history goes, the senate was supposed to be the equalizer to the executive and house. Even though the electoral college is supposed to curtail this to some degree, its still guided by population size. Bigger states will have more congressional districts so this also leads to inequality in house representation. The senate is therefore supposed to be this equalizing force that doesn't care how many people are in your state, you get equal say in some level of government than states with bigger populations.Why Montana has 2 Senators and California has 2 senators is something I'll never understand.
