I feel him

I remember and I can at least be honest when most people wont
I loved the I Am songs that hit hard... but alot of stuff was too different and didnt fit right

from what I remember, Nas was constantly doing different shyt and kind of proving he could hop on whatever and change it up alot
nothing wrong with that really, and he still does it later on in his career. But it turned into a weird collage of songs that dont fit together in a tracklist

alot of artists go through this really, but with him... he would bless the surface of a new sound and then quickly move on. It didnt really give things time to digest

it would be like "Quick to Back Down, Thugz Mansion, Made You Look"

I think when people allude to Streets Disciple its like that too...right when you get into a vibe it changes 180
his last few albums have sounded more cohesive sonically on topic. But none of it is a bad thing. Even Lost Tapes has a more cohesive sound than some real planned out albums

The real I Am that wound up spread across I Am, Nastradamus, QB Finest and Lost Tapes would be one of the greats.

Retail version was still a good album though even with the filler. Everyone I knew that was into hip hop was bumping that spring and summer of 99. NYSOM 2, Hate Me Now, Small World, Favor For A Favor, Ghetto Prisoners, You Won't See Me Tonight, Life Is What You Make It, Nas Is Like, Undying Love, there's some heat on there. Still don't get how You Won't See Me Tonight didn't get the Hype Williams video, woulda been big that summer

Nas has been at the forefront of some things but people forget he was at the foreground of the music leak wave. There was a Madonna single that leaked in 1998 that was when it first started popping up, then U2's album leaked, then most of Nas' shyt leaked. I agree the label handled it 100% wrong but then again, when you're the first one in the fire you're gonna make mistakes that we later critique and fix.

In hindsight I wish they had simply revamped it. Record some new tracks (Nas Is Like, Hate Me Now, etc), spice up the old tracks. Maybe add features to some shyt. I've said before I wish someone would have said hey why don't we put Slick Rick on Stay Dreamin Stay Schemin. A lot of people didn't hear most of the leaks anyway, so putting them back on the album with features or different verses would have easily worked.
Right - and in '98/99 only a small handful of people had enough bandwidth to even download the whole shyt anyway :heh:

300 murders a year
It's crazy that both those album get horrible reps for a handful of horrible/bad songs.

But, some of the best of Nas is on those two.

Last Words is peak Nas

Nas verse on last words might be one of his best verses ever

Nas lost tapes bring as great it is, gives us a glimpse of how great I am and nastradamus could have been if that 2 disc bootleg never hit the street. The 2 disc bootleg ruined possibly 2 more Nas classics after it was written.

But as others have said, those 2 albums really are not that bad. They not classics but they not horrible either

I think that mighta been recorded been for when Nas was gonna put out "Death of Escobar" before Stillmatic (which kinda ended up morphing into The Lost Tapes). So more 2000-2001 era? It's hard nailing down when some of these were recorded, like Rise & Fall for instance. This reddit index did an amazing job of cataloguing ALL his music though (every album, every unreleased joint, every guest feature). It's a great resource: https://www.reddit.com/r/nas/wiki/index
