Well, Nas Mom had just passed, so...I don't know about that. Pac voice is better of course.

And actually his mom passing made this one of the most depressing cd's of all time to listen too. it's nas only cd that was actually just for the time it came out.

This is about another music genre but I'm going to use this as an example.

Years ago VH1 had a Tournament style version for music.

It put Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (which was written by Prince) vs. Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven"

Both known great songs for their genre. The debate was that NC2U "sounds" better and thats the winner. The other side said that since Tears in Heaven was about his dead son so that should be considered the more emotional song. Overall more people went with the song that "sounds" more emotional.

People will choose the song that has more "pathos" (emotional/vivid language) than the one with more "ethos" (credibility)

ETA: Thats not to say Pac's didnt have credibility either it did...
Nas talking about his dead mom is a bit more credible in the moment emotion. However, Pac's song just comes across stronger.

Dear Mama is a reflective song that still has a bit of hope in it. So its easier to connect too.
I also think we gotta factor in that "grief" is something we dont naturally connect too as easily. I'm sure (God forbid its anytime soon...hopefully many years from now) that if my mom died I'd probably play that song more. (Nas's Dance)

Same with Tears in Heaven. The thought of losing a son is tough. I'm sure people who have lost kids connect with that more than most songs.
