New London — A New London woman was arrested Friday morning after reporting that her 4-year-old daughter was missing after she discovered that the little girl left the residence while she and a friend went out to smoke marijuana.
Rebecca Reyes, 23, of 163 Huntington St., was charged with three counts risk of injury to a minor, three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and falsely reporting an incident.
Police found the child hunched in a doorway at a neighbor’s residence, exposed to the elements. She was wearing a long sleeve T-shirt, pants and shoes. The child was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where she was being treated for hypothermia.
Police said at about 3:40 a.m. they received a 911 call from Reyes, saying that her daughter was missing and could not be found. Police were sent to Reyes’ home where they looked inside the residence and could not find the child.
At that time, Reyes said she put her child to bed at 12:30 a.m. along with her 5-year-old and 2-year-old children. She told police when she checked in on the children at 3 a.m., the little girl was not in bed.
Emergency personnel from the New London Investigative Division, Waterford and state police and the New London Fire Department were called in to assist with the search for the child.
At the time of the search, the outside temperature was 3 degrees, police said.
Reyes was further interviewed by police, and she then told them that she left her residence at 2 a.m. with her friend, leaving the children alone.
She said she and her friend drove around New London while they smoked marijuana, police said.
Reyes said she returned to the home about an hour later and discovered that the child was missing. She didn’t call police until nearly 40 minutes later.
The Department of Children and Families was notified, and the other children were placed in the custody of relatives.
