Wherever nikkas need to be told on
lost tapes isn't an album. It's a compilation of old unreleased songs and many were released on mixtapes and 12"s to DJs that we had from record pools back then. Some were songs left over form the I Am double disc and Stillmatic. As far as Stillmatic being better than Illmatic overall, the 2nd half of Stillmatic was levels below the 1st half. Side B, if you had the tape, wasn't as a good as side A.
Lost Tapes is definitely an album. I don’t even understand the argument against that. It was a commercial release by Columbia. It was released on CD. It charted on Billboard. It’s been released on vinyl. Checks all the boxes. Pretending like it’s some kind of mixtape that shouldn’t be apart of Nas’s discography is strange.

It's not an album because it was not thought as an album with the process of thinking a bout a single, there's no promo and no videos and Nas wasn't even involved, the label picked the song.
That's a compilation. Because if it is an album then lost tapes 2 is an album too, but people won't say this about the second one because it's not that good. The only reason people may say it's an album it's because it's dope and the songs mesh well together, and the songs are only 3 years apart of recording.

If I put hands on any artist vault and they say you can pick and chose any unreleased so,ngs to make an album, I can probably make a dope project but it will not be an album if the artist vision isn't part of it. That's like cheating in a sense to call that an album, it's a well though playlist and still a classic project nonetheless

Lost Tapes 2 is an album too :what:

And Nas was involved because he rapped on the damn songs :troll:

And he rapped on the beats—it wasn’t like he just spit some shyt acapella and someone added the beats later

You’re moving goalposts about what’s an album

Not every album has videos/singles

Not every album allows the artist to drive the vision of an album—how many times have we heard artists complain about their labels forcing them to put something commercial-sounding or radio-friendly so it appeals to a wider audience? Or having them take something off or editing it? Labels are always apart of the process in picking what makes the album.

It’s an album

I never looked at Lost Tapes as an album. Its officially billed and released as a compilation. Its the BEST compilation in music history in my opinion, but a compilation nonetheless. The Lost Tapes series is a dope side project of previously unreleased songs that Nas and the label gives to us fans but its not an official part of his discography.

But I will say it IS an official and integral part of his overall legacy, and really puts him apart as an artist of quality that even his cutting room floor songs are better than a lot of artists official albums.

So in a sense, it doesn’t add to his discography but it DOES add to his legacy. Hov don’t have no Lost Tapes. Ice Cube don’t have no Lost Tapes. Rakim don’t have no Lost Tapes. Only Nas.

I can agree with you and @Alexander Wiggin that it’s a special classic project

But we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on whether it’s an album

Arguably, if I’m being honest, it’s somewhere in between but because of it’s cohesiveness it’s always felt like an album

Cube had Bootlegs and B-Sides which was a compilation of unreleased songs, b-sides, and remixes. Not quite the same as Lost Tapes, but along the same line. It's a nice project but can't hold a candle to Lost Tapes obviously.

I wish Nas did release it as an album but that's just not how things were done then. He had Stillmatic at the end of the prior year and God's Son on the way so it was pushed as a compilation. But it definitely holds together as a complete body of work.

We know the REAL reason why those act like it’s not a REAL album.
