I'll say this: I don't think the beats are that bad; they're just good.

I feel like there were extremely high expectations because it's Nas and Premier together. Hence, the assumption was that Preem was gonna go above and beyond for Nas and lace him with godly tier production reminiscent of his prime compared to the works he recently released with Ransom, Roc, etc.

To me, these beats sound more tailed for guys like Ransom, Rome Streetz, Westside Gunn, etc of that ilk would rap to, for example, to a certain extent, Madman sounds like a Grielsda Records beat, not a Premier beat, basically, this production doesn't “sound” like Premier, at least in terms of what we know of him, its like I and others have alluded to, in that if you've been following Premier production over the last 15+ years, he doesn't make beats as he did in the 90s with Gang Starr, Jeru, Group Home, Biggie, Nas, etc, etc but the assumption was that he'd tap back into that since it's Nas.

The aggressive hard-hitting drums, snares, and signature scratches, etc are gone, they're more toned down and have been for over a decade, the only record in recent memory that he was a part of that sounded close to his prime years was the last Gang Starr album which may have been leftover tracks that he simply “updated” to sound a little modern.

If any other artist were rapping to these beats, it'd be perceived differently, maybe a bit more positive but since it's Nas, the perception for many leading up to this was that it had to be “elite” tier or else it's an automatic failure because simply being “good isn't good enough” because this is Nas people are talking about, a man who many champion as one of (if not) the greatest rapper ever.

Unfortunately, for Nas, since Illmatic, he's been held to this high standard where if his beats are not on some “outta this world” level of greatness, otherwise people will say his shyt is a failure. Even if the production happens to be just good enough, it's still considered a fail because he's being held to a standard most rappers don't face.

Ft. Stewart, Ga
From Budden’s interview

The working titles for the album were

“fukk a Title”

“Hip Hop is Alive”

They didn’t go with the first title because it would be too hard to promo and Premo said he saw how much grief the press gave Nas over the N I G G E R album title.

The second title was more concrete as they both felt good about it but then they saw that KRS & Marley Marl made an album called Hip Hop Lives so they put that aside.

Define My Name was always meant to be an announcement on the album and not on the album itself.

NY State of Mind Part 3 is a “capstone” for the NY series and there won’t be anymore. It was Nas idea to sample Billy Joel and he reached out to him to clear the sample. Says he wanted to do “more” with it but Billy is on hiatus.

Git Ready was the original intro for the album.

Of Nasty Esco Nasir, Nas says that Nasty is the MC and Esco is the alter ego. But you can represent both as long as you do it “right”.

Of the mythical Nas/AZ album, AZ told Nas he has a crop of beats waiting to go but AZ is so busy and always has so many ideas and its hard for them to get in a studio and just say their going to do it. Nas says they both want it to happen but its about timing and them both agreeing to lock it in.

Says his favorite AZ collab is Serious and he was upset that they couldn’t clear the sample to make an album. Also says The Essence and Phone Tap.

Says he originally sent Daughters to Eminem to get on but Eminem told his daughter he wouldn’t make anymore songs referencing her so Eminem told Nas “Thank you for sending me this because most rappers who want to collab don’t want to be conceptual, they just want to battle me.”

Says of rappers having their own podcasts, “Its about time for those who lived it to be in control of the narratives.”

Nas and Premo confirmed they WILL tour the album at some point.

Premo says he owns all of his publishing and says that the publishing royalties he gets from Hamilton is “Crazy”. Says that NY State Of Mind gets licensed so much he could take five years off if he wanted.

If they had to choose one song to introduce to a new Hip Hop fan. Preme couldn’t choose one, he said Eric B Is President and Check The Rhyme. Nas said Award Tour.

So they sampled Marco Polo for a few beats??

That tells me sample clearing was a concern....

Sample packs. Drum kits. Same shyt certain people cried about when Hit Boy was doing it is now spun as real rap for day one fans of late 80s/early 90s hip hop. You know, the good old days when guys used uh...sample packs, kits, and a corny white bassist to make boom bap. We all remember those days right?
:mjlol:

I called this days ago and people said it was a conspiracy. It's obvious. Polo is all over the credits, there's live instrumentation on multiple tracks, and while there are samples on the album it's clear as day they were limited.

They were supposed to be limited.

Day one, Premier said they wanted to take it back to the break beat era. That's why you see Preem sampling sh*t like "Pete 90" and speaking about 45 King. They spoke on the concept from the very beginning.

Problem is, they're speaking about sh*t these people didn't understand. So that's why n*ggas had other expectations. They're lost. They made an album that sounds exactly like what they said they were aiming for. But, the "outsiders" can't get with it because they weren't there for the era this is paying homage to. It's really that simple.
