I guess? De la soul just dropped an amazing body of work a few weeks earlier that maybe wasn’t de la soul is dead buttpefty damn close quality wise

if you were around during that era, you'd know that De la Soul is dead was shytted on too from some fans and the media. Even though it received 5 mics in the source and high praise from some other media, not everyone felt the same. Most fans were expecting another 3 feet high and rising. It's easy 34 years later since the death of Trugoy and the praise of the album to look back and THINK everyone was on board with it, but that definitely wasn't the case. This also applied to Eric B and Rakim's LTRHE. At the time, it also received 5 mics in the source, but Word Up magazine didn't praise it as much and many fans weren't into the darker tone of the album compared to the first 2 releases.

Both of those classics were seen as "fall-off's" by the general heads. Pos spoke on it before and said that's why they addressed a lot of that on Buhloone Mindstate. This was also when Lyor was speaking about how Rush was managing De La along with Tribe, but De La couldn't keep up with Tribe musically, on tour or get the fans as engaged. Tip mentioned it too and said this is when the split started between Native Tongues.

I forget who said it, but someone said the tape version fits the vibe of the album better and I think they're right. I have bought a few tapes over the years as a gimmick and I always play them at least once, and they always sound like shyt compared to other formats (I have all the Hitboy/Nas tapes except KDII, which didn't have a tape). But this one is different. Weird.

Disagree with the 2nd. In terms of averages and percentages…I can name some guys with greater discographies. Kendrick, Kanye, for starters. If you condensed Nas discography down to like his 4-5 best albums then yeah, now we’re talking. I’ll put Esco’s Top 5 up against any artist’s Top 5, confidently

Re listened to this over the weekend.

The production felt rushed and lazy plain and simple.

Some of the beats didn't have a decent mix. The samples weren't even chopped properly.

Overall the highs were enough to balance out the weak shyt.

3.5 mics

A lot of the beats sound like first takes, hollow skeletons of what could be great shyt.

I never compare solos to group, that's unfair. Biggie died after 2 alums and like you said Kendrick got one mid album already. Let's compare him to the jay's and nas' when he's at least 10 albums in

When we talk about illmaculate discography with classics at this level with 10 plus albums on Scarface comes to mind. On a more undergroud level Masta Ace and Freddie Gibbs got great solo disco, but they don't have top 50 hip hop albums oat

Folks, myself included, put Nas under a microscope that no other rapper has to deal with. The standards for him are different than any of his peers. He ain’t never been wack. He’s got two albums in illmatic and IWW that are easily in the best album of all time convo. (I’d put Lost Tapes in there too but I don’t want to get into no technical debate.) He got great records in every era. He’s influenced so many other guys. At 52, he’s still putting on for the culture. Sure, he got some uneven, inconsistent projects but show me someone who is 35 years in the game and 20 albums deep who doesn’t.
