Album is crazy. I love this shyt. I listened to Marci's and Ransom's collaborative albums with Primo before this one so I knew what to expect. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, but I thought the beats he's doing now sound the way they do because Premier using the new MPCs or something. A different high end and mids to em. We're used to a lot of thump from Premier. That's part of what's throwing people off. Then someone said that he's using sample packs and shyt from Marci Polo (and others I'm sure) and it all clicked. That's what it is. The samples are new loops and replayed shyt. It all makes sense. Even Hit Boy does this. It's a new industry standard to have "beat makers" send in compositions and the producer to loop or chop em. It's not the same as what were used to because they're not sending whole songs. No breaks, no bridge, no outro. Parts that are notorious for being chopped up and put in.
All in all, I enjoyed this more than any new Nas shyt besides Magic 1. Dj Premier still has ideas and vision to make an album into art, but the source he's flipping from isn't what we're used to. The sample pool feels sort of shallow compared to the greats he sampled from before. It bumps but it's not the same. Still my favorite album of the year next to Ghost and Mobb's. These all feel like complete albums, and have songs that blend together track to track without being generic and repetitive. Nas was on something and this album lyrically is the best I've heard in years from anyone. Dj Premier still held it down but we know it's not what could have been. Sample loop packs ain't the same.
