You clearly don’t remember this time

Damn near everyone considered this trash

It wasn’t till after Ether that people went back to this and was like “well I guess it wasn’t that bad :ehh:

If anything that’s the whole reason Nas even had to do Ether, because the Takeover verse was unanimously considered better than this. That wasn’t even a question in 2001. :unimpressed:

This lying bullshyt:laff:

I’m good fam it ain’t even serious but u dead thought this was weak? Sheesh.

I ain’t think it was weak personally but it was light for Nas

And most people I knew at that time thought it was ok at best. But no one thought it did any damage whatsoever to Hov. Takeover on the other hand had people saying Nas career was officially over. There was no song or verse in that whole battle that had more impact than Takeover. Ether had people saying Hov lost but no one thought his career was over.

And the Stillmatic freestyle had no impact at all. We all knew Hov was gone crush that shyt, it was just a matter of when.

Concrete, Concrete like Greg Street
But in the projects, I vision Muhammad, in linen garments
Preaching man, woman, and child, the living Prophet
And I'm similar, Nasir Bin Olu Dara Visqu Allah
Fistful of dollars in the dice game, God
The Ice King, God, the Black Christ, elegant stance
Clothes fit me like a crime boss, the medicine man

My favorite part :wow:

Fixed, and those bars were wayyyyyyyyy above most MCs caliber, even besting Hov.

As a southerner, i dont even know HOW i stumbled into this when it first dropped or why i was searching for disses but my gawd me and my sisters were stunned at how ill this shyt was when it first dropped.

yall gotta understand that nikkaz here in Jax, especially in 2001, wasn’t hip to NY rap like THAT.

i heard this shyt randomly on college radio one time before ether dropped on college radio. it's crazy looking back a lot of people never heard this diss back then so they always used to say that they were waiting on Nas to respond until ether came out. the internet wasn't popping like that but I was def on sohh. my friends never really heard this freestyle. but I loved this shyt. he got state property out the way quick to get at hov.

Bleek had been getting it since Nastradamus (you wanna ball till you fall I can help you with that, you wan't beef i could let a slug melt in your cap}:picard: so I wasn't surprised but when he mentioned beans, freeway I was :whoo:

that whole era is mythical. the atmosphere was crazy. real clash of the titans shyt.

Not sure about your edit. I always though medicine man was a reference to Eddie Murphy in holy man. Not sure if the math adds up but nas is a noted fan of delirious (serious w/ az) and / or 5% sh1t which would explain the line

dog that dude is all cap in here with the backpeddle shyt

this song was the first clip emptied... he made it clear he was in float mode, he ended the whole crew in 2 bars easily and let them know what time it was
drove back by with the .45 out... shot a few more shots in the air and came straight forward

Jay was working and using babymama shyt and "Is that your chick" and later "supaugly" were more ruthless but that babymama shyt aint gonna win in a feud when dudes are coming at your neck and your crews neck dolo
Nas kind of did was Mase did with Cam but obviously way quicker, he had more ammo and built his arsenal. Jay figured Nas was cooling off and attacked him with mid and fame. But none of that flossy, I fukked your bytch shyt is strong enough to win like that
If Jay would have baited Nas better he might have had a good battle... but he already showed his hand way prior. You cant say the same thing on every diss track over and over

Thats why this track was monumental. It showed the power and force of shyt brewing over, and he let it be known ... fukk all of yall 100% ... this shyt definitely had the streets bubbling we are still listening to it today.

Takeover wasnt as hard, the beat with the Doors sample was more like a victory lap and the bars werent poison. You cant victory lap while the dude is loading the llama :russ: Ether was fukking harsh even supaugly after wasnt really as harsh. He said he fukked carmen in like 4-5 songs there was nothing else left for him to say, he should have left that shyt alone because everyone knew she was a bird. That should have been the last thing he said not the first, and then you gave Nas enough leverage to strike when he played himself out saying the same shyt. The whole Stillmatic freestyle should have been where he fell the fukk back. Like dude said about feeling like a Pharaoh :russ: Nas was charging his cannon up on this bytch. Its the musical version of a stick up, he's waiting for anyone to make a move to kill them. Its a hole Jay dug himself into way before he fukked up by not planning right... him being insecure made him think a hoe was enough to tip the balance ... the hoe actually got you jammed up too.

nikka dropped personal attacks on your bday and told your crew to fall back and they didnt even fukk with you anyways, while you stood there and had to hear about reality minus yes men saying you were cool. Thats a cold ass drive home from the studio knowing people around you dont even respect you or take you serious and only latch on because of money. And secretly the world clowns you behind your back.
And dont get me wrong I love Jay, Nas, Big, Pac whoever... but the timing here was just fukking terrible... could have baited Nas way better than this. Should have dropped Supaugly, Takeover, Is That your chick last ... Nas would have had to dodge more and then respond at the end. By the time the battle got hot Jay already said all his main talking points.
