When I heard Illmatic more than a decade ago, there wasn't all this "yo this classic" talk. It was just "yo check out this album. It's really dope." I think it made it easier to enjoy because there was no pressure.
I remember hearing it for the first time. "It Aint Hard To Tell" changed my entire outlook on rap.
My first album had no famous guest appearances - Nas "Got Yourself A Gun" 2001.
Nas lied, Q Tip on One Love was a "famous guest appearance" on his first album

the outcome, im crowned the best lyricistProven wrong? Wasn't Q Tip on "One Love"?

I felt everything off rip, only thing was I was always like "yo why ain't Nas spit on The Genesis, that shyt would have been ill". But after years of jamming the album and understanding everything it stands for it's perfect that he didn't spit over it.I'm more interested to know what tracks people were feeling right away, and what tracks they didn't like but eventually warmed up to:
On first listen: NY State of Mind, The World Is Yours, Halftime, One Time 4 Your Mind, It Aint Hard To Tell
Warmed up to: Genesis, Life's A bytch, Memory Lane, One Love, Represent
