Cause hes viewed as an Old Head and hes actually Jay Z age, and he could remember Nas coming to his studio on some "lil dude from Queens that wants to rap just like me" style and then Nas over the years not only lapped him, but became the Messiah of lyrical East Coast Rap and purist Hip Hop culture in general, while he kinda fell off and never really got back to that when that shouldve been HIS throne, even with Dr. Dre in his corner. And now hes arranging a literal award ceremony to give him 500k and free healthcare. Nas kinda sonned his own idol. Why else would he get mad about a dope tribute song about him for years? UBR was the "reason" for their original fallout

I think Ra had an issue with Esco mentioning his seed’s mother and all that…which is understandable I guess if that’s not something even he himself ever put out there, dude is super on the low about his personal life.

Mistakes happen tho, I always go off intention personally, I’m not gonna get upset at someone for buying me an amazing, expensive ass birthday cake with my name and all that on it because it’s dairy and they didn’t know I have a milk allergy (I don’t but just speaking hypothetically), they had good intentions. Nas probably should have let him hear it before he released it but he probably wanted it to be a surprise…again, good intentions.

"I got mixed feeling when I heard it. Because you know number one, I'm a conservative person. I speak about what I feel I need to," Rakim said in an interview. "To do a biography about somebody that's like putting their business on wax. I felt a little funny about it at first and then not hearing nothing from Nas kind of confirmed the feeling."
Doubly unsettling for Rakim is the fact that Nas mentions the names of his children and other personal stories in the song. "You gotta' holla' at me man, something, otherwise I'm [going to] feel like you did it for a reason," he warned."Like, you have some kind of angle," he continued. "I never heard nothing from Nas, and me and Nas we don't have each other number, but we know people that know people who can get at each other. So, of course I feel a little funny because that's my business."

In a recent interview for Hard Knocks TV, Rakim Allah stood by his stance of being uncomfortable with the track. But he also added that he spoke to Nas and there are no ill feelings.

ā€œWe spoke briefly. I basically told him you know what it is and what they trying to do,ā€ Rakim explained. ā€œI pulled him to the side and let him know I still got love for him. At the same time it’s principles. I’ve always been a reserved person. There’s certain things I speak about and certain things I don’t speak about. I just felt violated almost that he touched on certain things I haven’t even touched on.ā€

Nas was heralded at the next Rakim following his masterpiece debut Illmatic. But Rakim feels the two share a deeper bond based on how he watched the Queensbridge prodigy develop before his very eyes during studio sessions.

ā€œNas is like my brother. He used to come to Powerhouse Studio in Queens where I did the Paid In Full album,ā€ he said. ā€œHe used to come through with Large Professor. I feel like I know him no just of him. It’s that connection and that bond but things are going to happen in Hip-Hop…Let’s not let the media blow this out of proportion.ā€

Funny thing is in 2005 in a joint interview with MTV Rakim praised the track to Nas’s face.

I think there was probably a tiny bit of jealousy on Rakim’s part because Nas strong armed the lane Ra was supposed to the Master in. Being called ā€œThe Next Rakimā€ when Nas was only 18 and Ra himself was still mid-20’s had to be disconcerting. Hell Large Professor himself admitted he was a bit jealous of Nas’s success because it happened at a time when his own career was foundering and his label had him on the shelf. Ra had a bad business deal with Eric B and couldn’t release any music in what was supposed to be his prime years while Nas had Steve Stoute and was going Platinum with two albums in the same year and being called rap’s greatest poet.

I’m glad they’re cool now and everything has come full circle. I think Nas really showed and proved his intentions and admiration for Rakim was always pure with this latest Grand Masters awards

Beautiful. And for it to happen in hip-hop’s 50th makes it all the more special because people didn’t think hip-hop would still be here by this point. Pushing it forward and honoring what came before us to pave the way—that’s how it should be. Those guys who really started this probably didn’t reap the financial benefits should be praised and celebrated so it’s dope to see something like this. I’m curious how sustainable this is. Would love to see this every year.

I mean for the entire gala not sure but trust Ben Horowitz can put a fraction of his wealth in an investment and pay artists off the interest forever. It's not a lot of money for a guy like him. He is worth billions.
