If anything I was letdown that Nas didn't use the original beat that had the change ups and stuff in it.

Never heard this. Props on the find. The beat changes are kind of distracting, though. Especially for this kind of record.

Good point. It might have been distracting. I do like the little intro though. Actually it looks like ALC went back and added those later.

“I remember later I wanted to spruce the beat up and put breakdowns in it and he was like, ‘Nah, it has a vibe like we’re really just in the studio and you put on a rough beat and I am just going through rhymes. If you put in breakdowns then its gonna sound too contrived.’ As a producer, I want to do all the bells and whistles but he made a good call.

Dope. I have to go through this Complex article later. Alchemist also added a bunch of extra stuff to the "Different Worlds" joint with Big Twin, but I always preferred the original. Same with the Rick Ross' "Triple Beam Dreams," which was Justice League rather than ALC, but still.

Different Worlds version 1 and 2 could be its own thread. They even changed up the lyrics too and added some singing. I think I prefer the original version also. The 2nd beat is a little more chopped up and refined, and the rapping is even a little smoother, but something about that original is so raw.

Alchemist re flips samples all the time. Even that new Mobb Deep joint Biology that came out this weekend is the same sample as that beat ALC did for Domo Genesis and Tyler (2nd beat on No Idols). I wish more producers would re-flip samples like that.

I think part of it is that we just get so used to the original, that we think that's how it's supposed to sound, so every other version, even if it's the "original," ends up sounding off to some degree. I first heard the tame version "Different Worlds" on a DJ Absolute mixtape and wore that shyt out. Then I think the reworked version was on one of Alchemist's retail projects.

MF Doom does the tinkering thing pretty often, too.
