Don’t forget Stay. That beat really touches the soul. I just wish Nas had used it to express the anguish from the divorce. It was the perfect canvas.

I agree, love that record to. Life Is Good is a great album.
In some ways, this album marks the end of hip hop as we all knew it growing up. That sound that was defined from 86-96.
What I mean by that, is this seems to be the last truly amazing hip hop album before mumble trap rap/singing started to dominate. I would say GKMC but even that album had some trap sounding beats.
Now of course there’s a burgeoning underground scene, but Life is Good debuted at #1. The release of this album was an event for hip hop. And it was universally recognized as a fire album at that time. At this point, you really got to give it that classic title. Summer on Smash is just the Braveheart Party to keep the historical cypher complete.

Album is definitely a sleeper cell classic. I remember just thinking it was good when it first dropped but I definitely didn’t view it in the same breath as Nas’s greatest albums. Fast-forward..I remember riding around one night in 2016 and randomly threw it on. was shocked at how crispy everything still sounded. Polished production, flawless lyrical execution, infinite replay value. Album really has stood the test of time and deserves its place amongst Nas’s classics.
I agree with you that it is one of the last great mainstream albums that makes 0 concessions to trap music. Not saying that as a negative. I’ve heard plenty of great music since then that has minor if not overt compromises to the trap sound from Jay, Pusha, Kendrick, Nipsey, J Cole, Schoolboy Q, KRIT, etc. But I do think it’s impressive that Nas managed to make a mainstream classic in this era and totally go left of center of the popular sound the whole way through.
