The leader of the national air traffic controllers' union is warning that the partial government shutdown could force "stressed out" air traffic controllers to make mistakes putting passenger safety at risk.

"I'm getting notes from people who are saying they're making mistakes that they hadn't made in the 10, 15, 20 years of service that they've been an air traffic controller. They're making them because they're stressed out, because they don't know when this is going to end and they're distracted," Trish Gilbert, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said Thursday on PBS NewsHour.

"We cannot have that in our system. It's unsafe and we need to open the government, get them paid...I think we are less safe than we were a month ago."

Funding for the Federal Aviation Administration lapsed on Dec. 22 and the partial government shutdown began, resulting in employees being furloughed or required to work without pay.

Its illegal for federal employees to strike, and that includes sick outs.

Im an ATC and im tired of all this writing letters to congress bullshyt. fukk if its illegal we should be making it so no airplanes get off the ground. But most my coworkers are p*ssy that rather pretend they doing something by handing out leaflets at airports and writing letters to congress like thats gonna do anything

The problem with this is that they'd almost all have to do it and most people are pussies with too much to lose to risk their livelihood.

Last time federal ATCs nutted up and striked Ronald Reagan fired 40,000 of y’all :mjlol::hhh:

It took decades for the pre Reagan era numbers to finally be back to normal. Safe to say i don’t think that route is going to be taken again. That wasn’t during a shutdown though so maybe it’ll work this time :patrice:

EDIT: 11,000 were fired my bad

Yeah I understand that it's illegal but seriously what could the govt do? They can fire you guys but who the fukk can they hire that's going to work for FREE? There's 40k TSA workers alone. How could they just fire all 40k plus all the ATC's? How will they train the people they hire to replace them? Seems like you guys have all the power right now.

Reagan only fired 11,000 people. It didn't cause that much of an uproar because a lot of people thought the ATC's were striking for a minuscule reason (5,000 dollar raise) and the govt knew the strike was coming years in advance and had contingency plans. No way they can fire 40,000+ people and hire enough people (to work for free mind you) and train them. This would be a TOTALLY different situation than occurred in 1981.
