Yea, been here since 93, purchased my home in 98. Raised children and such, so I am pretty much a Virginian now. So over 32 years here. Been here longer than any other place, and I have been to a lot of places.

Edit; Wait, 94 I mean. So 31 years. 93, I was still in Atlanta and then Athens Georgia.
im assuming you enjoy it there. i didn't have that good of a time. i think its cool if you are older or have a family or are transient military, but i had an awful time personally. its a very interesting place.

Oh, I can understand. I only stayed because of the low cost of living, the amount of house I was able to purchase for a reasonable price, and the neighborhood was full of our people, prosperous, and safe to raise children. If we wanted excitement, we left this area to go north or south. Yea, it is pretty sedate here, and while there is something sometimes fun to do, it is no where near as fun as any real major cities are. Also I recognize none of the seven cities are major cities.

Dallas, Texas but living in Houston, Texas
1. When (if ever) did you first celebrate Juneteenth?
2. Hot dogs didn't make it to the US until 1867. Post-slavery. From Germany. So they definitely weren't eating them.

Is there a reason you'd scrape these good white folks plates of processed meats clean, only to turn your nose up at Caribbean dishes? :feedme:

To be fair (it all makes more sense once you buy in and challenge them on it):

White people can't ne immigrants. They're just "White" and that's right  Hand me one of them links.
You're bushed again?!:dahell:

You JUST got out!:dahell:

not only that, but the whites there are wild racist, and the black people are very (alot not all, and my perspective is different because im OCONUS 6 months out of the year) very saddening in mindset and behavior. especially if you're a young professional. northern VA is much better.

Ya don’t even give Texans their due for the original holiday.

I think we should give it back.

Same.

Seems like Juneteenth would only be relevant to people in Texas or people who have come from there. I've been trying to find application to my own family's history but there is none.

By the time the emancipation proclamation got to Texas, my own black ancestors had already founded towns in Central Ohio, built churches, schools, owned private land, and were as prosperous as their white neighbors. These ancestors were never enslaved. I know this doesn't translate to the broader black experience but it elucidates that the black experience was varied and not uniform.

I'm happy that black Texans got Juneteenth recognition. But it should've been a Texas state holiday, not federal, imo.

Those of us with roots in the Carolinas didn't hear about it afaik. I recall a few celebrations, but most of us learned about it in the early 2000's.

We're celebrating your freedom. Should we not? Like, wtf is you saying?

Don't be weird about it, even wp and immigrants who dgaf get the day off.
It's not weird....white folks I already know never heard of it until it became a federal holiday.

Black folks....hard to tell because some folks was celebrating for years while others started recently but still before it became federal.

That should be the ADOS Independence Day

But we not not white, just (relatively recent) northerners. :skip: Half my family done went back down south anyway.

Iirc, I heard about it from (black, obvs) southerners in hs and college.

We know it's TX specific, but celebrate with gusto, like its for all of us, because we don't know the date our people found out. Even if we did, we supposed to have 30 different holidays for it? :pachaha:

1. I'd genuinely be surprised if you EVER celebrated Juneteenth before Biden making it a federal holiday. Yall "tether" on to that shyt like the very people you despise
2. What if they served hotdogs and hamburgers? You DO KNOW those are German right??? Would you still make the thread?
