They should have been praised for balancing commercial records with pure hip-hop tracks but some saw it as a slight detremint to them.
The other killer was the 4 years they took off between albums. You forget how much happened in the 90s during that period from the East Coast vs West Coast battle, Mafioso rap to the jiggy era back to the Platinum thug era. So many different sounds and styles came in during that era and they never stuck or adjusted
I didnt mind the record they did coming back but it was almost too commercial and pop even by their standards. Had it come 2 years earlier maybe they get some slight attention again but even then it would have felt like a step back from Poverty's Paradise (Which might have been their best rounded album)
So I think taking too much time off and trying to fit back in hurt them and in retrospect it shouldt have been that difficult.
But they shouldnt be knocked for making anthems and being a dope dope pure Hip Hop group. Honestly to this day when I think the word Hip-Hop, I think Treach first *shrug*
