I better not see any of you guys defending the owners next lockout. They are the ones giving out these contracts

Blame the players for the owners and their dumb ass GMs.

NBA isn't a free market economy though. But yea dudes are something else when it comes to other people's money.

It's not exactly a laissez-faire economy, but it is certainly a free market. The only sort of regulations are the salary cap (which can be exceeded in certain cases) and the max contract. Otherwise the supply or demand for the players is what determines their value. But I see where you're coming from.

Works until you have a team with two players who teams will pay more than the max.

Team would use their 1 slot on one of the players. Team would lose other player to FA because they could only offer a max, when other teams (w/o a star) could offer over the max.

And you know what would happen? Some team would use that slot to pry a 2nd or 3rd level star away from a contender and you would be right back here complaining.

And what about teams with two legit stars like OKC? What would happen in a Kobe and Shaq situation?
I wouldn't complain. I want players to get paid the most possible $. Uncapped slots would help to solve the small market team issues of keeping stars and even out the talent league wide, for the most part.

It would hurt super teams, but the heavy tax does that anyway. Instead of just penalizing owners into not spending, have them pay MORE to compete.

Everywhere...You never there.
That $24 billion deal is exactly why they could collapse. Somebody has to pay it.

As we move forward in the digital era, television as an industry may not be able to generate the money it once did. You have a younger generation of fans with shorter attention spans that live on youtube clips.

The league isn't going to fall apart tomorrow. But $24 billion being tossed around like it's nothing, organizations have collapsed like a deck of cards over much less.

IME, young cats rarely watch the games. As they get older, they might. But as for now they really do check the YouTube clips and the scores that pop up on their phones.

And it's tough to fit the NBA's payment structure into loose principles of capitalism because it really is its own, contract-laden entity with a contingency element that doesn't make sense to most of us lay folk.

It's mind boggling. It really is if applied to real world, 9-5 shyt. But I dig where @houston911 and others are coming from shyt's ridiculous from the working/layman's perspective. @LV Koopa made excellent points too.

That's out of the league's control. Ballmer helped the league out By grossly overpaying for the Clippers. That jacked everyone's value up, but yes the operational losses are what were being argued.

Balmer was last year, the lockout was what 4 years ago. Team values always go up and for owners to blatantly ignore that was bullshyt. And to complain about players salaries when their GMs are the ones signing these deals is some bullshyt too.

You think loopholes and stuff were used to cook every team's books? It doesn't take an internal investigation to figure out how teams don't make money. It would take a lot of corruption to hide that lie just to NOT play games that (with supposed loopholes) make you money anyway.

Not for everyone. Even players conceded that. Players just thought the number of teams who claimed that was excessive. 21 teams reported losses of some sort. The players thought it was more like 9 or 10. Are you gonna tell me even the 9 teams the players thought had a legit gripe were bullshytting too?

not arguing about some teams losing money operationally. Again some. But their Team Valuations more than nullify that since you can write off losses. That is a given.

The only way to truly write that off is by selling it. It's not a good thing for a buyer or seller to know the property isn't profitable.
