The ideas on the automatic playoff spot got me thinking, there is really no other way to make this interesting because players aren't going to play harder for an extra bonus or whatever.

Lemme know what you think of this plan for automatic playoff spots for the winners:

-Teams that finish below 10th:
Automatic 8 seed. Teams 6th - 9th do the play-in for the 6 and 7 seed.

-Teams that finish in play-in position (7th - 10th) :
Automatic 6 seed. 6th place drops to the play-in tournament for the 7 and 8 seed.

-Teams that finish in automatic qualifying spots, non-division winners:
Home court advantage through the 1st 3 rounds, keeping the seed they earned.

-Teams that finish in automatic qualifying spots & win their division:
Automatic #1 seed AND home court in every single round.

I'd up the ante and throw a 1st round lottery pick to the winner of the team. Yeah it won't necessarily motivate the players, but it would motivate the teams instead if it meant potentially getting in the top half of the lottery or the 1st pick in general.

For the players, that lottery pick could potentially be what helps you get a ring depending on player and/or return that it turns into.

Is this a real problem?
You have 20 teams out of 30 make the playoffs.
How is someone going to both win this but be bad enough to miss the postseason?

And if they are so bad they miss the playin spots, why do we need to see them in the postseason? Especially in the NBA where upsets are limited due to 7 game series.

Which is why you give extra rewards for still playing hard and winning in the regular season.

EXTRA REWARDS DONT MEAN shyt.

WE JUST SAW AN 8TH SEED IN THE FINALS
AND A 7TH SEED IN THE WCF.

THIS AINT THE OLD DAYS.

THESE VET TEAMS JUST WANNA MAKE THE PLAYOFFS HEALTHY AND GO FROM THERE

See, I like this. The two finalists get a play-in spot and if they already have one you go down the list till the team that doesn't. But the winner gets a top 3 pick.

I mean in the Premier League, if the winner of the FA Cup also made it to Europa League then the next finishing team gets a spot. I think it something different and keeps teams from that tanking bullshyt that I hate about American sports.

I can see lower tier teams bytching and complaining if the Lakers or Celtics somehow ended up with a top pick due to it, but you voted yes for the midseason tournament so you can't necessarily complain when the incentives get increased to get everyone on board with it.

The lottery pick motivates teams and the star players as well, which is what the league is hoping for with this tournament.

On top of that, over one game damn near anyone can beat anyone. That's the cool part about tournaments.

And you're right. If I'm Giannis and I want another ring, shyt winning a top 3 pick for next year is a great way to keep me with the Bucks for the long term. It also gives the small market teams something to look forward too and potentially PLAN for. Imagine a 3-4 season rebuild of the Magic because they won the NBA Cup twice. That's the shyt that keeps franchises afloat.

Which is REALLY what this is about. Golden State's run made the rest of the NBA damn near irrelevant.

I think your ideas are interesting. I would do something where you get extra bumps/tie breakers. Kinda like what you are suggesting but a little different.

If you win 50 games it gets treated like you won 55 games. If somebody else won 55 games you get the tie breaker. I feel like that is the best of both worlds. You got a legit reason to compete in the tourney but you also have reason to keep trying.
