The fanbase DGAF about that.
Yeah folks keep ignoring that these are supposed to be about fan engagement. The media tried with all their might to make that in season tournament make sense, but here we are in April and nobody still cares about it or is looking forward to it next season. Because there's zero stakes to it and zero incentives for anyone to care about it.

Nobody cares about the weird jerseys. Nobody cares about the weird court colors. Folks will care if the tourney guarantees a #1 draft pick or if the tourney guarantees a playoff spot.

You can't give a #1 draft pick to a team that wins a tournament. Maybe the last pick in the lottery as a minimum picking position unless they're a lottery team.

Those lottery picks are really supposed to be for bad teams. The rich would get richer there.

I feel like a free ticket out of the play-in is a great compromise. That way you can say everyone had the opportunity to win the in season tournament so tough break if you was #6 and a play in team won that and got immunity.

Either that or guaranteed home court through the entire playoffs.

I still believe if you win the NBA Cup it should guarantee play-in immunity granted you at least have a record that qualifies for it. Should automatically bump you up to the #6 seed if lower and even if you are the lower seed give you automatic home court advantage up until and including the conference finals.

Put the winning team in the lottery would help solve this problem especially under this new CBA.
The lottery is for bad teams and savvy traders. In theory a really great team could win the cup multiple years in a row. It would undermine the point of the lottery to have such a team in it and it would boot out a team that needs to be in it.

Parity and the new CBA will help solve that problem. I'm not saying to boot a team that needs to be in it, but add the winner along to the pool.

You mentioned it undermining the point of the lottery, but isn't guaranteeing a playoff spot or guaranteeing homecourt advantage essentially the same thing in the case of the regular season and being a higher seed?

If you really wanted to stress the importance of the 'NBA Cup' then maybe if you win the whole thing you get a top 4 placement in your conference regardless of record.

I like the courts and the little things they do they make it different but there's still low stakes. Every major Soccer tournament either has stakes or tradition and this has neither... and there's no basketball system designed where you can involve lower level teams that wouldn't usually compete against NBA teams.
