Laurent Duvernay-Tardif - graduated medical school while playing in the NFL
Amobi Okoye - skipped a couple grades and entered the NFL at age 19 IIRC
Tremaine Edmunds- skipped a couple grades and entered the NFL at age 19 IIRC

He was all Ivy at Harvard. Think he got invited to an NBA camp and was cut before the season. He's said openly that he wishes he had given a better effort when he was there.

Football is such a tough sport that execs and broadcasters will question people who clearly have other options. Whether it's academic background or family wealth. When Giants legend Phil Simms' son,Chris, came into the league, broadcasters questioned his heart and motivation because he grew up rich.

Football is different because you have to absolutely commit yourself 100% to football to survive and eventually succeed.

Basketball players set the template for success outside of sports, not saying football players aren't smart but you don't have a huge list of NFL players who have the business acumen of guys like

Bill Bradley
Lebron James
Magic Johnson
Michael Jordan
Shaq
Kobe Bryant

and I could go on and on.

Also because of the global nature of basketball it almost forces you to be more worldly. There are a lot of players who speak two or more languages and have been all over.

Again I'm not saying there aren't smart NFL players or baseball players but basketball even at it's base level stimulates, different parts of the brain than other sports and this coming from a football first guy.

If that's what you took away from my post then you are mistaken I didn't equate being worldly with being intelligent but traveling does force to at minimum open up your horizons and the the average professional basketball player does this a lot more than than the average professional football player. Also the NBA is far more diverse than the MLB so there are more languages being spoken by NBA players than MLB players.
